“…Now appoint for us a king to judge us like the nations.”

1 Samuel 8:5 ESV

The Israelites wanted to behave like the nations around them. They wanted a king who would go before them, one who had exceptional strength, stature, and charisma, one whom they could adore. They did not want to appear inferior because they lacked something that the nations boasted about.

Are you craving for things that your neighbours possess and boast about? The advertisements and social media post seem to be telling you, that people are much better off because of something they achieve or possess. Now, that very thing has become the desire of your heart and the subject of your selfish prayers. Yet once these desires are fulfilled, they soon leave you unsatisfied and craving for more.  How blessed is the one who has satisfied his heart with the goodness of God, content with the peace, security and identity that is to be found in Christ!
