“…The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was.”

1 Samuel 3:3 ESV

It was the duty of the priests to ensure that the lamp in the tabernacle kept burning from evening to morning (Exodus 27:21). Yet, while Eli and his sons slept, it was young Samuel who stayed in the temple watching over the lamp ensuring that it stayed lit till morning. His diligence and devotion would soon be rewarded by an encounter with the living God.

How earnest are we in our seeking of God and His righteousness? Do we need Him only momentarily to fulfil the desires of our heart or do we long to know Him as our Heavenly Father? What are the entanglements of this world that are inhibiting your pure devotion to Christ? God wants to light the flames of His love in your heart, but only if you are willing to surrender your heart completely to His care.
